If the burst is on the hot side, closing the valve on top of the hot water tank stops the tank draining into the house.

Move rugs, boxes and anything plugged in clear of the water. Don't run appliances in a wet room.

Photograph the meter reading before and after shutdown. It tells us how much water went where.
